What should you know about cryo embryo transfer?
Updated

Short answer
Cryo embryo transfer is a fertility treatment in which a thawed embryo is placed into the uterus during a prepared cycle.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Embryo status
- Warmed from storage before transfer
- Support medicine
- May include prescribed micronised progesterone
What the procedure involves
An embryo created during IVF is stored at a very low temperature and later warmed for transfer. The clinic prepares the timing of the uterine lining either by tracking ovulation or using prescribed hormones. On transfer day, the clinician guides a thin catheter through the cervix and places the embryo in the uterus. The procedure is usually brief, but the full plan depends on your cycle, embryo stage, medical history, and clinic protocol. Transfer does not itself confirm implantation or pregnancy.
Preparing for and after transfer
Take prescribed medicines, such as micronised progesterone when included in your plan, at the times directed. Attend lining checks and follow instructions about appointments, food, activity, and medication. After transfer, ordinary gentle movement is generally compatible with care, but your clinic should set limits for strenuous activity and travel. Continue prescribed support until the clinic tells you otherwise, and take the pregnancy test on the date provided. Light cramping or spotting can occur; do not use symptoms to predict the result.
When to contact the clinic urgently
Contact your fertility clinic urgently for heavy bleeding, severe or worsening pelvic pain, fainting, fever, repeated vomiting, marked abdominal swelling, or shortness of breath. Seek emergency help for collapse, severe breathing difficulty, or chest pain. Report any positive pregnancy test with significant pain or bleeding promptly because early pregnancy complications need assessment.
Questions for your doctor
Ask how your cycle will be timed, which medicines you need, what happens if an embryo does not warm as expected, and when testing will occur. Clarify activity guidance, warning symptoms, the number of embryos planned for transfer, and how results will be communicated.

Questions people ask
Is cryo embryo transfer the same as fresh transfer?
No. A cryo transfer uses an embryo that was previously stored and warmed, while a fresh transfer follows the original treatment cycle.
When should I take a pregnancy test?
Use the date given by your fertility clinic, since testing too early can be difficult to interpret.
