Short answer

Crohn's disease malabsorption occurs when inflammation or bowel changes reduce the digestion or absorption of nutrients and fluids.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

What changes
Digestion or absorption of nutrients, fluids, and salts may be reduced.
Possible clues
Fatigue, weight loss, loose stools, bloating, or deficiency symptoms can occur.
Assessment
History, examination, and targeted tests are considered together.

Why absorption can change

The small intestine absorbs many nutrients, while the colon helps recover water and salts. Crohn's inflammation, previous bowel surgery, rapid movement through the gut, or a narrowed and damaged area can interfere with these jobs. The result may be tiredness, weight loss, loose stools, bloating, or signs of a vitamin or mineral deficiency.

Malabsorption is not diagnosed from one symptom. A clinician may review food intake, stool changes, medicines, hydration, weight trend, and examination findings. Blood tests can help look for anaemia or nutrient problems, while the underlying Crohn's Disease activity also needs attention.

Supporting nutrition safely

Tell your healthcare team about reduced appetite, food avoidance, ongoing diarrhoea, pale stools, mouth soreness, tingling, or unusual fatigue. Keep a food and symptom record if it is practical, and choose fluids and meals according to advice. Do not start high-dose vitamins or restrictive diets without guidance because some supplements can interact with treatment or conceal another problem.

A GP Consultation can arrange assessment and referral to a gastroenterology or nutrition team when appropriate. Take prescribed Crohn's treatment consistently, since controlling inflammation can support bowel function. Ask whether a Blood Test or dietitian review is suitable for your situation.

Signs needing prompt attention

Seek urgent help if you cannot keep fluids down, feel faint or confused, pass very little urine, develop severe abdominal pain, or have a swollen abdomen with vomiting. Contact a clinician promptly for ongoing diarrhoea, rapidly worsening weakness, new bleeding, or an inability to eat. These symptoms can reflect dehydration, obstruction, active inflammation, or another condition.

Questions to discuss

Ask which nutrients or hydration markers need checking, whether your current bowel activity could explain the symptoms, and how results will affect treatment. Discuss safe foods during a flare, when supplements are appropriate, and which changes in weight, stools, or energy should lead to earlier review.

Questions people ask

Does malabsorption happen to everyone with Crohn's disease?

No. It depends on the location and activity of inflammation, bowel surgery, transit speed, diet, and other individual factors.

Should I take supplements on my own?

Speak with a clinician first so the product and dose match a confirmed need and do not interfere with other treatment.
