Is Crohn's disease contagious?

Crohn's disease is an inflammatory bowel condition. It results from an abnormal immune response involving the digestive tract, rather than from a germ that passes between people. You do not catch it by living with someone, caring for them, kissing them, or using the same bathroom.

Abdominal pain and diarrhoea can happen with many infections as well as with Crohn's disease. The symptoms themselves do not prove that the condition is contagious, and they should be assessed in context.

If you have ongoing diarrhoea, abdominal pain, weight change, tiredness, or blood in the stool, arrange a GP Consultation. A clinician may ask about your symptoms, medicines, family history, and recent infections. A Blood Test can help look for inflammation or anaemia, although diagnosis may need other tests.

If someone close to you has Crohn's disease, offer practical support with meals, appointments, and rest. Normal handwashing remains sensible for general infection prevention, but you do not need to avoid the person because of Crohn's disease.

Seek urgent medical help for severe or worsening abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, a swollen abdomen, heavy rectal bleeding, faintness, or inability to keep fluids down. These warning signs can signal dehydration, obstruction, bleeding, or another problem that needs prompt assessment; they are not evidence that Crohn's disease has spread to another person.
