What should you know about crazy paving eczema?

The surface may look like irregular paving stones because the outer skin barrier has lost water and developed shallow or deeper fissures. It commonly appears on very dry areas such as the lower legs, but other regions can be involved. Atopic dermatitis can produce dryness and itch, while cold air, frequent washing, irritating products, or reduced skin moisture can aggravate cracking. Cracks may sting when exposed to water or products and can allow germs to enter.

Use lukewarm rather than hot water and a fragrance-free cleanser only where needed. Pat the skin dry, then apply a thick emollient while it is still slightly damp; ointments or rich creams often protect fissures better than light lotions. Reapply after washing and cover painful splits with a clean non-stick dressing. Avoid scrubbing, picking scales, and fragranced products. A clinician may recommend an anti-inflammatory eczema treatment when inflammation is active.

Arrange a dermatology review if the cracks keep returning despite regular moisturising, disturb sleep, or involve a large area. Seek prompt medical care for increasing warmth, swelling, pus, honey-coloured crusts, rapidly worsening pain, fever, or red streaking, because these can signal infection. Sudden widespread peeling or severe discomfort also needs urgent assessment.
