What the cramps may mean
A membrane sweep separates the membranes near the cervix during an examination. Contact can leave period-like cramps, pelvic pressure or light spotting. Some people then notice contractions that become longer, stronger and more regular; others do not go into labour after the sweep. Cramping alone cannot show whether the sweep has worked.
What you can do
Rest, drink fluids and use comfort measures approved by your maternity team. Track whether contractions settle with rest or develop a regular pattern, and note bleeding or fluid loss. Follow the instructions given after the procedure and keep your maternity unit’s number nearby. Induction of labour may be discussed if labour does not begin.
When to seek care
Contact your maternity unit urgently for heavy bleeding, a gush or ongoing leak of fluid, severe constant pain, fever, faintness, reduced fetal movement, or contractions that are becoming regular and difficult to manage. If you are unsure whether fluid is amniotic fluid, call for advice.
