What should you know about cradle cap skin rash?

The medical term is infantile seborrheic dermatitis. It often appears as greasy or dry flakes and yellowish or whitish scales on the scalp. Mild redness may show between the scales. It can also affect the eyebrows, behind the ears or other skin folds. Cradle cap is not caused by poor hygiene and does not usually bother the baby as much as an itchy rash would.

Wash the scalp with a mild baby cleanser, then loosen softened scales with a soft brush or cloth. Do not pick, scratch or pull crusts away, because broken skin can become sore or infected. A clinician may suggest an emollient to soften stubborn scale; follow product directions and keep products away from the eyes. If inflammation continues, a clinician may consider another treatment, including topical antifungal treatment, after checking the diagnosis.

Arrange an assessment if the rash spreads beyond the scalp, becomes very red, swollen, wet or painful, or develops bleeding, pus or an unpleasant smell. Seek prompt advice if the baby seems unwell, has a fever, feeds poorly or is unusually sleepy. A rash that does not improve with gentle care may need a different diagnosis or prescription treatment.
