Cradle cap side effects and warning signs

A baby may have mild dryness or temporary redness around a patch of scale. More noticeable irritation often follows rubbing, scraping, fragranced products, or leaving a product on longer than advised. A reaction can also be difficult to separate from the original rash, so note when a change appeared and what touched the scalp.

Pause any new product that causes burning, marked redness, swelling, or worsening scale, and rinse the scalp gently if appropriate. Avoid scratching, essential oils, and adult scalp treatments. Use mild washing and handle only loose flakes. If treatment is needed, a clinician can select an emollient approach or topical antifungal treatment suited to the baby and the appearance of the rash.

Contact a clinician for spreading redness, warmth, swelling, pain, pus, repeated bleeding, or a wet crust. Seek prompt medical advice if the baby has fever, seems unwell, feeds poorly, or develops a rash outside the scalp. Breathing difficulty or facial swelling after a product needs urgent care.
