Cradle cap removal: gentle steps

Cradle cap forms patches of scale that can stick to the scalp because skin oils hold the flakes together. The visible layer can be white, yellow, or brownish. It may recur after it has been cleared, so removal is about comfort and cleanliness rather than stripping every flake at once.

Use clean fingers to apply a little plain emollient to the affected area. Give it time to soften the scale, then massage very lightly. Wash with a mild baby shampoo and use a soft brush only over flakes that are already loose. Rinse the brush between uses and pat the scalp dry. Never use fingernails, combs with sharp teeth, or forceful rubbing. If the scale is extensive or the scalp is inflamed, ask a clinician about emollient therapy or topical antifungal treatment rather than trying stronger home products.

Contact a clinician if removal leaves raw skin, bleeding, marked redness, swelling, or discharge. Get prompt advice when the rash spreads, the baby appears uncomfortable, or the scalp has a strong odour.
