What should you know about cradle cap oozing clear?

Typical cradle cap produces scale and flakes, not ongoing drainage. Clear fluid can appear when a baby rubs an itchy patch, when a scale is pulled away, or when the skin barrier is inflamed. The fluid may dry into a light crust. Yellow or green drainage, increasing redness, warmth, swelling, pain, or an unpleasant smell raises more concern for infection and needs clinical assessment.

Gently rinse the area with lukewarm water and pat it dry with a clean soft cloth. Keep nails short and avoid picking, scratching, or peeling crusts. Do not seal a wet area under an oily layer, and do not use antiseptics, steroid creams, or antifungal products without advice. A clinician can recommend an emollient or topical antifungal treatment when the diagnosis and site make it suitable.

Contact a clinician promptly if clear oozing continues, returns repeatedly, or comes with broken skin, spreading redness, warmth, swelling, or tenderness.
