What should you know about cradle cap on skin?

Although the scalp is the usual site, infantile seborrheic dermatitis can affect skin that produces more oil. You may notice fine or thicker scales beside the nose, in the eyebrows, behind the ears, or in neck and other skin folds. The colour can vary with skin tone, and the area may be mildly itchy or otherwise comfortable. Moisture trapped in a fold can make irritation more noticeable.

Clean affected areas with lukewarm water and a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser, then pat dry carefully, especially inside folds. A thin layer of a suitable emollient may soften dry scale, but avoid getting products into the eyes or mouth. Do not rub hard or peel flakes away. If the rash persists, a clinician can decide whether a topical antifungal treatment or another medicine is appropriate for the location and the baby's age.

Seek medical advice for spreading redness, swelling, warmth, cracking, bleeding, pus, or increasing tenderness. Prompt assessment is sensible when clear fluid continues to ooze, the baby has a fever, or the rash involves the eyes or causes difficulty feeding. These features can point to infection or a different skin problem rather than uncomplicated cradle cap.

Ask which areas can be treated at home, whether a product is safe near the eyes or in folds, and how to keep the skin dry without over-washing. Ask what changes would mean the diagnosis or treatment needs review.
