Cradle cap on a newborn’s eyebrows

The scale can sit between eyebrow hairs or collect along the brow line, sometimes with mild redness. It may occur at the same time as scalp scale, hairline patches, or flakes behind the ears. A newborn may not appear bothered. However, marked itch, pain, swelling, blisters, oozing, or a rash that spreads quickly is not something to label as cradle cap without an examination. The eyebrow area also sits close to the eye, so products must be used cautiously.

Wash your hands, dampen a clean soft cloth, and dab or wipe only the loose scale. Do not use fingernails, cotton buds inside the eye area, or force crusts away from the hairs. Keep cleanser, oil, and cream out of the eyes. If the scale is stuck, ask a clinician whether an age-appropriate emollient can soften it and how long it should remain before washing. Persistent or inflamed patches may lead a clinician to discuss topical antifungal treatment, but a newborn should not receive medicated cream without specific advice.

Ask for medical advice if the eyebrow skin cracks, bleeds, becomes hot or swollen, or produces fluid or crust that keeps returning. Seek prompt care for eye redness, discharge, difficulty opening the eye, fever, poor feeding, or unusual drowsiness. A review is also sensible when gentle care has not helped or when the rash appears on several new body areas.
