Cradle cap in puppies

Cradle cap usually describes infantile seborrheic dermatitis in human babies. Puppies may instead have dandruff, fleas, mites, ringworm, bacterial or yeast overgrowth, contact irritation, or another skin problem. Look for the location of flakes, scratching, hair loss, redness, odour, scabs, and whether other animals or people have itchy spots. These details help a veterinarian narrow the cause.

Do not peel crusts, use human dandruff shampoo, apply essential oils, or put an antifungal or steroid product on the puppy unless a veterinarian directs you. Keep bedding clean, avoid sharing brushes, and take clear photographs of the affected skin. Follow the bathing and parasite-control plan recommended for the puppy's age and weight. A veterinarian may recommend a veterinary cleanser, emollient support, or targeted treatment after examining the skin.

Arrange prompt care for spreading redness, pus, bleeding, marked swelling, pain, a strong odour, intense scratching, or bald patches. Same-day advice is sensible if the puppy is very young, lethargic, not eating, or has a fever. Ringworm and some parasites can spread, so mention any similar lesions in household animals or people.
