Cradle cap in adults

The term cradle cap usually describes infantile seborrheic dermatitis, but adults can develop a similar pattern of greasy flakes, redness or itch on the scalp. It may also affect the eyebrows, beard area, sides of the nose or behind the ears. Psoriasis, eczema, contact irritation and fungal infection can look similar, so appearance alone cannot confirm the cause.

Wash regularly with a gentle cleanser and use fingertips rather than nails. Avoid scratching, picking and strongly fragranced hair products. A plain emollient may help soften adherent scale, but rinse it away and stop if irritation develops. If symptoms continue, a clinician may recommend topical antifungal treatment or another targeted product after examining the scalp. Follow directions for contact time and avoid applying treatment to broken skin unless advised.

Book a review if scaling is new, one-sided, rapidly spreading, painful, thickly crusted or associated with hair loss. Seek prompt care for pus, warmth, marked swelling, bleeding or a fever. Assessment is also useful when over-the-counter care repeatedly fails, because psoriasis, eczema or infection may require a different approach.

Ask which diagnosis best fits the distribution and appearance, whether a medicated product is appropriate, and how long to try it. Mention new shampoos, hair dyes, medicines, skin conditions and any affected body areas.
