How to treat cradle cap

Cradle cap is infantile seborrheic dermatitis affecting the scalp. It can produce adherent flakes without making a baby ill. Treatment aims to loosen scale and calm irritation, not to scrub the skin bare. The rash can improve and later reappear, so a gentle routine remains useful after the visible flakes lessen.

Use a mild cleanser and your fingertips to wash the scalp, then rinse thoroughly. For stuck scale, apply a small amount of plain emollient before washing and brush lightly only after the flakes soften. Do not pick, scratch or apply adult dandruff products without professional guidance. If this approach is not enough, a clinician may recommend topical antifungal treatment or another age-appropriate option; follow the instructions exactly and keep products away from the eyes.

Seek medical advice for painful, hot, swollen, bleeding or oozing skin, or if the rash has a strong smell. Arrange a review when it spreads beyond the scalp, affects the eyelids, disturbs sleep, or does not settle with gentle care. A clinician can distinguish cradle cap from eczema, infection or another rash.

Ask which treatment fits your baby's age and affected areas, how often to apply it, and when to stop. Bring the product packaging and describe any change after washing or moisturising.
