How to prevent cradle cap

Short answer
Cradle cap cannot always be prevented, but gentle washing and avoiding scalp irritation can help reduce recurring scale.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- What to avoid
- Scrubbing, picking, fragranced products and essential oils
- Useful routine
- Mild wash, thorough rinse and gentle drying
Why it can recur
Cradle cap is infantile seborrheic dermatitis, a type of scaling rash that commonly affects the scalp. It is not a sign that a baby's scalp is dirty. Normal skin oil and the skin's response to it can contribute to flakes, so vigorous scrubbing is not a useful prevention method.
Scalp habits that help
Wash the scalp with a mild baby cleanser as part of a regular routine, using fingertips rather than nails. Rinse away product and pat the head dry instead of rubbing. If early scale appears, a plain emollient can soften it before washing; remove only what comes away easily. Avoid tight hats, fragranced products, essential oils and repeated picking, all of which may irritate delicate skin. If scale keeps returning or becomes inflamed, ask about topical antifungal treatment rather than trying several products at once.
When to seek care
Contact a clinician if prevention measures do not help and the rash is spreading, intensely red, cracked, bleeding, wet, crusted, or uncomfortable. Prompt advice is also sensible when the baby has fever, seems unusually tired, or the skin around the rash looks infected. These features can point to a problem other than uncomplicated cradle cap.
Questions for your doctor
Ask how often to wash the scalp, which ingredients to avoid, and whether an emollient is appropriate for your baby. Mention any family history of eczema, the areas involved, and whether the rash changes after a product is used.

Questions people ask
Can poor hygiene cause cradle cap?
No. Cradle cap is not caused by a dirty scalp, and harsh washing can make irritation worse.
Should I wash a baby's hair every day?
Use a gentle routine suited to the baby's scalp; a clinician can advise if frequent washing is irritating or scale persists.
