Cradle cap and hair falling out

Cradle cap, also called infantile seborrheic dermatitis, creates greasy or flaky scale on the scalp. Hairs can become caught in that scale and come away when a crust is rubbed, scratched, or lifted. This does not mean the hair root has been permanently damaged. A smooth patch, marked redness, swelling, oozing, or broken hairs may point to another scalp problem and deserves an assessment.

Soften scale before washing with a small amount of a bland emollient, then use a soft brush or washcloth only while the scale releases easily. Wash with a mild baby shampoo and rinse well. Do not pick, scrape, or pull crusts from attached hairs. An emollient approach can be discussed through Emollient Therapy, and a clinician may consider Topical Antifungal Treatment when the appearance or course suggests it is appropriate.

Arrange medical advice if shedding continues after the scalp settles, a bald patch enlarges, hairs break close to the skin, or the scalp becomes painful, very inflamed, swollen, or wet. Seek prompt care if the child seems unwell or the area develops spreading redness. These findings can signal irritation, infection, or a different cause of hair loss.

Ask whether the scale looks like cradle cap, whether any treatment is needed, and which product is suitable for your child’s age. Mention when the shedding began, whether hairs have roots or breakage, and whether there is itching, redness, or discharge.
