What should you know about cradle cap face rash?

Cradle cap is infantile seborrheic dermatitis, and facial involvement commonly follows areas near the scalp. You may notice flakes or yellowish scale at the hairline, between the eyebrows, around the nose, or behind the ears. The skin can be mildly pink or greasy. Facial rashes in babies can also be caused by eczema, contact irritation, or infection, so appearance and symptoms together matter. Cradle cap itself is not a sign that the baby is unclean.

Clean the face with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free cleanser, then pat dry. Do not scrub or peel scale. A small amount of plain emollient can soften rough patches, but keep products away from the eyes, nostrils, and mouth. Wipe milk or saliva from the skin without repeated rubbing, and change damp clothing or bibs. If the rash continues, a clinician may recommend a tailored treatment; topical antifungal treatment should not be started on a baby’s face without advice.

Arrange a review if facial redness is intense, the skin is swollen, painful, cracked, weeping, or covered with yellow crust, or the rash spreads beyond the usual areas. Seek prompt help if the baby has fever, feeds poorly, seems unusually sleepy, or develops swelling around an eye. A rash that lasts despite gentle care also deserves a closer look because facial eczema and infection may need different management.
