What should you know about cradle cap ears treatment?

Cradle cap is infantile seborrheic dermatitis. Although it often begins on the scalp, scale may collect behind the ears, along the outer ear, or in the crease where the ear meets the head. The skin may appear flaky, yellowish, pink, or mildly greasy. Moisture from bathing, milk, or drooling can remain in the fold and make irritation more noticeable. Scale in the ear crease does not mean anything should be inserted into the ear canal.

Use lukewarm water and a mild cleanser on the outer ear and behind it, then gently pat the fold dry. A plain emollient may soften attached scale before washing, but keep it out of the ear canal and away from the opening. Remove only flakes that lift without force. Avoid cotton buds, fingernails, fragranced products, and vigorous rubbing. If the rash persists, a clinician can decide whether an emollient routine is enough or whether topical antifungal treatment is appropriate.

Contact a clinician if the fold is cracked, bleeding, swollen, hot, painful, or producing fluid or yellow crust. Prompt assessment is sensible if redness spreads onto the cheek or scalp, the baby reacts strongly when the ear is touched, or the baby has fever or seems unwell. Do not place creams, drops, or oils into the ear canal unless a clinician specifically advises it.
