What should you know about cradle cap dry skin?

Cradle cap, also called infantile seborrheic dermatitis, can produce white, yellow, or brown flakes on the scalp. The skin may look dry, yet the scale can also be slightly oily. It may extend to the hairline, eyebrows, behind the ears, or other areas with skin folds. Babies are generally comfortable, although some have mild itch or irritation. Cradle cap is different from a simple lack of moisture, so repeated rubbing or harsh cleansing can make the surface more sensitive.

Wash the scalp with a mild baby cleanser and lukewarm water, then pat it dry. If scale is stuck, apply a small amount of a plain emollient before washing, allow it to soften briefly, and loosen only what lifts easily with a soft brush. Do not scratch, pick, or pull attached flakes. Keep oils and products away from the eyes, and stop any product that causes redness. A clinician may recommend an appropriate medicated option when scale is persistent; topical antifungal treatment should be used only with advice suited to the baby’s age and skin.

Arrange medical advice if the rash spreads quickly, becomes very red, swollen, warm, painful, cracked, or wet, or develops yellow crusting or discharge. Seek prompt help if your baby seems unwell, has a fever, feeds poorly, or is unusually sleepy. A clinician should also assess a rash that does not fit the usual cradle cap pattern or keeps returning despite gentle care.
