What should you know about cradle cap diaper rash?

Cradle cap usually causes flaky or greasy scales on the scalp. Nappy rash, also called diaper dermatitis, affects skin covered by the nappy and may look red, sore, shiny, or chafed. Moisture, contact with urine or stool, rubbing, and products can irritate this area. A yeast-related rash may be more sharply red and involve the skin folds. Having both rashes does not prove that one caused the other, so the appearance and distribution matter.

Change wet or soiled nappies promptly. Clean with lukewarm water or a gentle fragrance-free product, pat dry, and allow brief air exposure when practical. Apply a protective barrier recommended for babies and avoid talc, fragranced wipes, scrubbing, and tight nappies. Do not use a scalp product in the nappy area unless a clinician says it is suitable. A clinician may discuss Emollient Therapy or Topical Antifungal Treatment when the pattern suggests a particular need.

Arrange an assessment if the nappy rash is severe, painful, blistered, bleeding, weeping, crusted, or spreading. Seek prompt care if your baby has a fever, seems unwell, or develops pus-filled spots. Review is also needed when the rash involves the folds, keeps returning, or does not improve with gentle cleaning, drying, and protection.
