What should you know about cradle cap care?

Cradle cap, also called infantile seborrheic dermatitis, can cause greasy or dry flakes and yellowish scales on a baby’s scalp. The skin may look mildly red underneath. It is often not very itchy, and it is not caused by poor hygiene. Scales can cling to the hair, so trying to lift them forcefully may irritate the skin.

Before washing, apply a small amount of a bland emollient to the affected scalp and leave it briefly to soften the scales. Use a soft baby brush or washcloth to loosen only the flakes that come away easily. Wash with a mild baby shampoo, rinse well, and pat dry. Do not use adult dandruff products, essential oils, or medicated creams unless a clinician recommends them. For persistent or widespread symptoms, a clinician may discuss Emollient Therapy or Topical Antifungal Treatment.

Arrange medical advice if the scalp becomes very red, swollen, wet, crusted, painful, or develops pus-filled spots. Seek prompt help if your baby seems unwell, has a fever, or the rash spreads beyond the scalp. A review is also sensible when gentle care has not helped or you are unsure whether the rash is cradle cap.
