COVID-19 and tension headaches

A tension-type headache commonly causes a steady, pressing discomfort across the forehead, temples, or back of the head. It may be linked with fever, poor sleep, dehydration, screen strain, stress, or tight neck and shoulder muscles during an infection.

COVID-19 can cause headache without a cough, and a headache may remain while other symptoms settle. Headache is not specific to COVID-19, so the pattern and accompanying symptoms matter.

Rest in a quiet room, drink fluids regularly, eat if you can, and take breaks from screens. Gentle neck movement and a warm or cool pack may ease muscle tension. Use paracetamol or another suitable medicine only as directed on its label or by a clinician, taking account of your health and other medicines.

Record when the headache starts, its location, and whether fever, light sensitivity, or vomiting occurs. Avoid taking pain medicines more often than advised, as frequent use can maintain headaches.

Get urgent help for a sudden severe headache, weakness, fainting, confusion, a stiff neck with fever, new speech or vision problems, repeated vomiting, or a seizure. Arrange a GP Consultation if the headache is new, keeps returning, worsens, or does not respond to usual measures.

Ask whether the pattern fits a tension-type Headache, whether another cause should be checked, and which pain relief is suitable for you. Mention recent infection, hydration, sleep, medicines, and any neurological symptoms.
