COVID and laryngitis: what should you know?

The larynx contains the vocal folds. Infection, coughing and repeated throat clearing can make these tissues swollen, so they vibrate differently and the voice sounds rough or weak. A common cold can cause a similar illness, while acid reflux can irritate the larynx without a viral infection.

Laryngitis commonly settles as the trigger improves, but the degree and duration of symptoms vary. A hoarse voice by itself does not establish that COVID-19 is the cause.

Rest your voice and speak softly when needed; avoid shouting and whispering because both can strain the vocal folds. Drink fluids, avoid smoke and other irritants, and use humidified air if dryness worsens discomfort. Do not share cups or utensils while you are unwell, and follow current local guidance for respiratory infection.

A GP consultation can help if symptoms are troublesome, recurrent or slow to improve. Use medicines for pain or fever only if they are suitable for you and according to the label.

Get urgent help for difficulty breathing, noisy breathing, inability to swallow fluids, drooling, rapidly worsening swelling or new confusion. Arrange review for persistent hoarseness, repeated episodes, coughing blood, a neck lump or severe swallowing pain.

Ask whether the symptoms fit laryngitis, whether reflux or another irritant could be contributing, which pain-relief options suit you, and when your voice should be examined if it remains changed.
