COVID and flu shot: what should you know?

COVID-19 and flu vaccines protect against different viruses, and eligible people may receive them during the same vaccination visit. Having them together can reduce the number of appointments, although a clinician may recommend separate timing based on your health, local guidance, vaccine availability, or a recent illness.

Influenza and COVID-19 can cause overlapping symptoms such as fever, tiredness, cough, and body aches, but one vaccine does not replace the other. Vaccination prepares the immune system to recognise its intended virus. Protection can change as viruses circulate and vaccine recommendations are updated, so the product and timing should be confirmed at the appointment. A vaccine cannot treat an infection that is already established.

Tell the vaccinator about current illness, previous vaccine reactions, allergies, pregnancy, immune conditions, and medicines. Bring any vaccination record you have. A mild reaction such as a sore arm, tiredness, headache, or short-lived fever can occur; rest, fluids, and a cool cloth may make you more comfortable. Follow the clinician’s advice about symptom relief rather than taking a medicine automatically. Stay at the clinic for the advised observation period.

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, widespread hives, fainting, or sudden severe weakness after vaccination. Contact a clinician if fever is persistent, symptoms are worsening, or you are unsure whether a reaction is expected. If you have symptoms of COVID-19 or influenza before an appointment, ask whether to postpone the visit and how to test or isolate according to current local advice.

Ask whether you are due one or both vaccines, whether they can be given on the same day, and which formulation is appropriate. Check how a recent infection changes timing, whether your medicines affect vaccination, and which symptoms should prompt medical review. You can also ask for a written record of what you received and when the next dose may be considered.
