What should you know about covering impetigo?

Impetigo is a contagious bacterial infection that often causes small blisters, sores, or honey-coloured crusts. It may occur around the nose and mouth, on the hands, or where irritated skin has been scratched. Atopic dermatitis and other breaks in the skin can make infection easier to develop. A dressing can protect a sore from rubbing, but a tight or damp covering may trap moisture and irritate nearby skin. Avoid picking crusts or sharing towels, clothing, bedding, razors, or cosmetics.

Wash hands before and after touching the area. Clean gently as directed, pat dry, and use a fresh non-stick dressing if a clinician recommends covering it. Keep the dressing loose enough for comfort and replace it when wet or dirty. Wash hands frequently, keep nails short, and launder items that touch the sore.
