What should you know about coughing after sneezing?

Sneezing clears irritants from the nose, while mucus draining into the throat can trigger a cough soon afterwards. Allergic rhinitis may cause repeated sneezing, a runny or blocked nose, itchy eyes, and throat irritation. House dust mite allergy and pet allergy are possible triggers in some homes. A common cold can produce a similar sequence, usually with a sore throat, tiredness, or changing nasal mucus.

The timing matters: symptoms after cleaning, entering a dusty room, or being near an animal suggest an environmental trigger, whereas gradual symptoms after contact with an unwell person may fit a cold.

Drink fluids, avoid smoke and strong fragrances, and gently clear nasal mucus. Keep a note of where and when the sneezing starts, including exposure to dust, pets, or seasonal outdoor air. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether allergy medication is suitable and how to use it safely. Do not combine several cold or allergy products without checking their ingredients.

Arrange an appointment if the cough lasts, disrupts sleep, repeatedly follows exposure to a trigger, or comes with wheezing. Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, swelling of the lips or tongue, faintness, or a rapidly worsening reaction. Fever with chest pain or unusual weakness also warrants prompt assessment.
