Short answer

Cough without a runny nose can still occur with a cold, allergy, reflux or lower-airway irritation, so consider breathing symptoms and timing.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why nasal symptoms may be absent

A cough can begin in the throat or lower airways, so a runny nose is not required. A common cold, influenza or COVID-19 may include cough with little nasal discharge, especially as symptoms change. Allergic rhinitis, house dust mite allergy or pet allergy can irritate the airway without obvious dripping from the nose. Sinusitis may cause mucus draining toward the throat rather than out of the nostrils. The cough’s timing, associated symptoms and exposure history provide more useful clues than the absence of one nasal symptom.

Notice fever, sore throat, body aches, facial pressure, wheeze, breathlessness and exposure to dust, animals or illness. Record when the cough is worse, including at night or after lying down.

What may help

Drink fluids, avoid smoke and strong fragrances, and reduce exposure to known dust or animal triggers where practical. Wash hands and improve ventilation when respiratory infection is possible. Warm drinks may soothe throat irritation. Ask a pharmacist before using antihistamines, decongestants or cough medicines, particularly for children, pregnancy or other conditions. If symptoms began after a specific exposure or keep returning, arrange an assessment rather than repeatedly self-treating.

When to get help

Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, confusion, fainting, blue lips or coughing blood. Arrange medical review for a cough that persists, worsens, disrupts sleep, or comes with wheeze, high temperature, dehydration, facial swelling or significant facial pain. A clinician can examine the nose, throat and chest and decide whether testing or treatment is needed.

Questions to ask

Could this be an infection, allergy, sinus problem or airway irritation? Do my symptoms need testing? What exposures should I avoid? Which changes mean urgent care?
