What should you know about cough and runny nose?

A Common Cold can cause watery or blocked nasal passages with throat irritation and cough. Allergic Rhinitis may bring repeated sneezing, itchy eyes, and clear drainage, especially after exposure to a trigger. Sinusitis can add facial pressure, reduced smell, or thicker nasal discharge. COVID-19 and Influenza can also begin with cough and nasal symptoms, sometimes alongside tiredness, headache, or fever. These symptoms overlap, so they do not identify one condition by themselves.

Rest, drink fluids, and use saline nasal spray or rinse if it is suitable for you. Wash hands and cover coughs to reduce spread when infection is possible. Avoid smoke and known allergy triggers; keep bedroom air comfortable rather than heavily perfumed. A pharmacist can advise on an antihistamine or other symptom medicine, including safe use with your medical conditions and regular treatments.

Get urgent help for difficulty breathing, blue lips, severe drowsiness, sudden chest pain, or inability to keep fluids down. Arrange medical review for worsening facial pain, eye swelling, dehydration, a persistent high temperature, or symptoms that improve and then become worse. Consider local infection guidance and testing when exposure or a public-health concern makes it relevant.
