Cough and strep throat

Strep throat is a bacterial throat infection that commonly presents with a sore throat and may include fever, painful swallowing, swollen neck glands, or inflamed tonsils. A prominent cough, runny nose, hoarseness, or eye irritation may fit a viral illness more closely, although symptoms can overlap. Tonsillitis has several possible causes, so a throat appearance alone may not settle the diagnosis.

A clinician considers the whole pattern, examines the throat and neck, and may use a throat test when appropriate. Do not start leftover antibiotics: the right treatment depends on the cause and your medical history.

Drink fluids, choose soft foods if swallowing hurts, and rest your voice. A pharmacist can advise on suitable pain or fever relief for your age and health conditions. If a clinician confirms or strongly suspects bacterial infection, follow the prescribed antibiotic course exactly and do not share medicine. A GP consultation can clarify whether testing or treatment is needed.

Seek prompt medical advice for severe throat pain, difficulty swallowing fluids, persistent fever, worsening symptoms, or tender swollen neck glands. Get emergency help for trouble breathing, drooling because swallowing is impossible, a muffled voice with marked throat swelling, or rapid deterioration. Cough with chest pain or significant breathlessness also needs urgent assessment.
