What should you know about corticosteroids for lip eczema?

Lip eczema can cause dryness, itching, redness, scaling, cracking, or soreness. A topical corticosteroid reduces inflammation while the skin barrier is recovering. It does not remove a trigger such as fragranced lip products, saliva, toothpaste ingredients, or repeated lip licking. Crusting, spreading redness, or marked swelling can point to irritation, infection, or another condition rather than simple eczema.

The lips and skin folds beside them absorb medicines readily. Using a stronger product, applying it too often, or continuing it beyond the advised course can lead to irritation, thinning, or colour change. A clinician may instead consider a non-steroid option when repeated treatment is needed.

Use only the preparation supplied or recommended for the lip area, applying a thin film to affected skin as directed. Keep it out of the mouth unless the product is specifically intended for oral use. Apply a plain, fragrance-free ointment or balm regularly to reduce water loss, and stop licking or picking the area. Pause new cosmetics, flavoured balms, and products that sting until the cause is clearer.

If symptoms return soon after treatment, arrange a review instead of repeatedly restarting leftover medication. Take the tube or a photograph of its label to the appointment so the clinician can check its strength and ingredients.

Seek prompt care for rapidly increasing swelling, trouble breathing or swallowing, pus, honey-coloured crusts, fever, or painful blisters. Arrange a dermatology review when the rash reaches inside the mouth, keeps cracking or bleeding, or does not settle with the advised plan. A persistent rash may need assessment for contact allergy, infection, nutritional problems, or another form of dermatitis.
