Triamcinolone acetonide corticosteroid: uses and precautions

Triamcinolone acetonide, also known by the brand name Kenalog, dampens inflammatory activity. Depending on the formulation, a clinician may use it on the skin, inject it into a lesion, or prescribe it for another medical purpose. An intralesional steroid injection can be considered for selected raised scars, thickened inflammatory lesions, or other local problems; it is not suitable for every lump, rash, infection, or pigment change. The diagnosis and the tissue’s location determine whether this medicine is appropriate.

Tell the clinician about diabetes, immune problems, current infections, skin thinning, previous steroid reactions, and all medicines. Ask whether the medicine will be applied or injected, what the goal is, and whether the area needs more than one visit. After treatment, follow wound-care instructions and avoid pressing or massaging the site unless told to do so. Local effects can include temporary tenderness, colour change, thinning or indentation of the skin, and visible small blood vessels. Report any new concern rather than repeating treatment on your own.

Contact the clinic for increasing redness, warmth, swelling, drainage, worsening pain, delayed healing, or a noticeable dent or colour change. Seek urgent help for fever with a rapidly worsening site, facial swelling, breathing difficulty, or signs of a severe allergic reaction.
