What should you know about corn rash?

Corn rash is a descriptive term rather than a specific diagnosis, so the appearance, timing, exposures, and associated symptoms guide the next step. A rash called corn rash may occur after eating corn, touching corn products, or being exposed to an unrelated irritant at the same time. It can appear as itchy patches, bumps, redness, scaling, or small blisters. The label alone cannot distinguish food allergy from contact irritation, heat, fungal infection, or an inflammatory condition.

Record when the rash began, where it appeared, what touched the skin, and whether symptoms followed eating corn. A reaction limited to contact areas can fit Contact Dermatitis; sweating and blocked ducts can fit Heat Rash; moist skin folds can develop Intertrigo. Other conditions, including Atopic Dermatitis, Psoriasis, Ringworm, Scabies, or a Drug Rash, can resemble one another.

A food reaction may include hives, swelling, vomiting, wheezing, or symptoms in several body areas. A rash that appears only after a topical product, flour, or food handling may need a different assessment from one that follows eating.

Gently wash away suspected contact exposures, avoid scratching, and use a bland fragrance-free moisturiser on intact skin. Keep the area cool and dry. Do not start a restrictive diet or repeatedly re-test a suspected food without medical advice. Photograph the rash during a flare and keep a simple exposure diary, including new medicines, cosmetics, detergents, foods, and heat.

Call emergency services for trouble breathing, throat or tongue swelling, faintness, or rapidly spreading hives after food exposure. Seek prompt medical assessment for fever, facial or eye swelling, painful skin, blisters over a large area, pus, or rapidly worsening redness. Arrange routine review if the rash persists, recurs, spreads, or disrupts sleep.
