What should you know about Contrex isokinetic dynamometer?

Short answer

A Contrex isokinetic dynamometer measures muscle performance while controlling movement speed, helping clinicians assess strength, balance and rehabilitation progress.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Purpose
Controlled measurement and exercise of muscle performance around a joint
What you do
Push or pull through a guided movement while the machine controls speed
How results are used
To help tailor rehabilitation and track change alongside clinical assessment

Direct answer

It is a clinic-based testing and exercise system, not a scan. The machine keeps the chosen speed steady while adapting resistance to the force you produce through the movement.

What the assessment shows

A clinician positions and straps the body so the target joint moves in a controlled path. After practice repetitions, you push or pull against the lever arm. The system records outputs such as torque, work and how performance changes across repetitions.

Results may compare opposing muscle groups, the injured and uninjured sides, or the same limb at different rehabilitation visits. Interpretation depends on pain, technique, effort, the selected speed and your clinical goals; a single score does not by itself clear someone for sport.

How to prepare and take part

Tell the clinician about recent injury, surgery, swelling, joint instability, pain medicines and any movement restrictions. Wear clothing that allows access to the joint and follow the warm-up and practice instructions. During testing, report sharp pain, catching, dizziness or a feeling that the joint may give way.

Ask how the settings match your activity and how the measurements will change your programme. When the test supports a return-to-sport decision, it should sit alongside movement quality, functional tasks, symptoms and confidence rather than replace them.

When testing should pause

Stop the session and alert the clinician if you develop sudden severe pain, new numbness or weakness, marked swelling, chest discomfort, faintness or difficulty breathing. Arrange clinical review before testing if an injury is worsening, you cannot safely move the joint, or you have not been cleared to load a recently operated area.

Questions for your clinician

Which joint and muscle groups are being assessed? What result would change my rehabilitation plan? How will pain or limited movement affect interpretation? Will you repeat the same setup later so the measurements are comparable?

Questions people ask

Does isokinetic testing hurt?

You may feel muscular effort, but sharp or increasing pain is a reason to stop and tell the clinician. Settings and range can be adjusted to your condition.

Can the machine decide whether I can return to sport?

No single machine result makes that decision. Clinicians combine the measurements with symptoms, examination findings, functional performance and the demands of your sport.

Is the test the same as strength training?

The equipment can be used for both assessment and controlled exercise. Your clinician selects the mode, speed, movement range and effort level for the specific purpose.
