Contrave rash: what to know

A new rash can have several causes, including a drug eruption, contact irritation, heat rash, eczema, psoriasis, a fungal infection, or scabies. Note when it began in relation to starting or changing Contrave, where it appeared, whether it itches, and whether it is spreading.

A medicine-related rash can occur even when the medicine was previously tolerated. Do not assume every rash is caused by Contrave, and do not restart or change the dose without speaking with the prescriber.

Contact the prescribing clinician promptly for advice about the next dose, especially if the rash started soon after treatment began or after a dose change. Take a clear photograph, keep the packaging and medicine list available, and avoid adding new creams or medicines that could obscure the pattern.

Use gentle, fragrance-free skin care and avoid heat and scratching. A clinician may need to inspect the rash and review other medicines, recent products, infections, or exposures before recommending treatment.

Get emergency help for trouble breathing, wheezing, faintness, swelling of the lips or tongue, blistering, skin peeling, painful skin, sores in the mouth or eyes, fever, or a rapidly spreading rash. These signs can indicate a serious reaction and should not wait for a routine appointment.

Ask whether the rash could be a drug eruption, what to do about the next dose, which symptoms require emergency care, and whether another medicine or product may be contributing. Mention allergies, recent infections, and every prescription, supplement, and skin product you use.
