What should you know about contrast medium ct scan?

A CT scanner uses X-rays and computer processing to create cross-sectional images. Contrast medium changes how certain structures appear, helping the radiologist separate blood vessels, organs and areas of concern. It may be injected into a vein, swallowed, or given by another route depending on the body area being examined. With an injection, a brief warm feeling, metallic taste or sensation of passing urine can occur and usually settles quickly.

Tell the imaging team about a previous reaction to contrast, asthma, kidney problems, thyroid disease, pregnancy or possible pregnancy, breastfeeding, and all medicines you take. Follow the centre's instructions about eating, drinking and medicines; these can differ with the type of scan and contrast route. If a blood test was requested to assess kidney function, make sure the result is available. During an injection, immediately mention pain, burning or swelling around the cannula site.

Alert staff at once if you develop difficulty breathing, throat tightness, facial swelling, widespread hives, dizziness or feel faint during or soon after contrast administration. If these symptoms begin after leaving, seek emergency medical help. Contact the imaging service promptly about increasing pain, tightness, blistering or marked swelling at the injection site. A mild rash, itching, nausea or other new symptom after the scan should also be reported so the team can advise you and document the reaction.

You can ask which contrast route is planned, why it is needed for this scan, and whether kidney testing is required. If you previously reacted to contrast, ask how that history changes the plan and whether another imaging approach is suitable. Confirm which regular medicines to take on scan day, when you may eat or drink, and how you will receive the result.
