Contractions and Your Waters Breaking

Contractions are rhythmic tightenings of the uterus. Waters breaking means the membranes around the baby have opened, causing a gush or a continuing trickle of fluid. The fluid may keep leaking as you move. Some people have contractions first, while others notice fluid first and develop contractions later. Urine and vaginal discharge can also be confused with amniotic fluid, so uncertainty is a reason to call.

Note the time the fluid started, its colour and smell, and whether it is a gush or a leak. Use a sanitary pad rather than a tampon, and note contraction length and spacing. Contact your maternity team for instructions, especially if you are before your expected term. Avoid intercourse, swimming, and inserting anything into the vagina until you have received advice.

Seek prompt maternity assessment after suspected waters breaking, even if contractions are absent, so the fluid and baby's wellbeing can be checked. Get urgent help for green or foul-smelling fluid, heavy bleeding, fever, severe abdominal pain, reduced baby movements, or a strong urge to push. Repeated contractions before term need prompt assessment because they can indicate preterm labour.

Ask how to distinguish fluid from urine, where to attend for testing, and how long to wait before calling again if contractions do not start. Ask which changes in baby movements or fluid colour require immediate attention.
