Contractions Before Your Water Breaks

The uterus may tighten while the membranes around the baby remain intact. Early labour contractions can be irregular, then become longer, stronger, and closer together. Some people notice backache, pelvic pressure, or period-like cramps. Waters may break later in labour, or a clinician may discuss breaking them during care. Contractions before waters breaking do not by themselves show whether labour will progress quickly.

Rest, drink fluids if you have been told this is suitable, and note when each contraction starts, how long it lasts, and whether the pattern is changing. Try a comfortable position and keep your maternity contact details nearby. Do not place anything in the vagina if you think your waters may have started leaking. If you are unsure whether fluid is amniotic fluid, contact your maternity unit for advice.

Call your maternity team promptly if contractions are regular and strengthening, you think your waters have broken, or you are before your expected term and having repeated tightenings. Seek urgent assessment for heavy bleeding, severe or constant abdominal pain, fever, green or foul-smelling fluid, reduced baby movements, or a strong urge to push. Follow the local maternity unit's instructions about when to attend.
