Short answer

Continuous sweating may be caused by heat, activity, emotions, medicines, hormonal changes, infection, or an underlying health condition.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

The short answer

Continuous sweating may be caused by heat, activity, emotions, medicines, hormonal changes, infection, or an underlying health condition. Sweating is the body's way of releasing heat, but sweating that happens without warmth or exertion, soaks clothing, interrupts sleep, or is new for you deserves attention. The pattern, location, and other symptoms help a clinician work out the likely reason.

What continuous sweating can mean

Sweating across the body may occur during fever or another infection. It can also accompany changes in hormone levels, anxiety, low blood sugar, or an overactive thyroid. Some medicines can increase sweating as a side effect, including medicines that affect mood, pain, or hormones; do not stop a prescribed medicine without medical advice.

Sweating mainly from the palms, soles, underarms, or face can be a form of excessive sweating that is not caused by heat. Note whether it began in childhood or adulthood, whether it affects both sides, and whether it happens during sleep. Damp skin can become irritated, and ongoing fluid loss may contribute to thirst, dizziness, headache, or weakness.

Sweating is not a reliable way to identify one specific illness. A clinician may ask about weight change, fever, palpitations, menstrual or menopausal changes, sleep, stress, substance use, and recent medicines before deciding whether tests are needed.

What you can do now

Keep a brief record of when the sweating occurs, which areas are affected, possible triggers, and any fever, weight change, racing heartbeat, cough, or bowel changes. Wear loose, breathable clothing, change damp clothes, and replace fluids regularly. If sweating follows a new medicine or dose change, contact the prescriber or pharmacist for advice rather than changing it yourself.

Arrange a routine appointment if the sweating is persistent, worsening, occurring at night, or affecting work, sleep, skin, or daily activities. Assessment is especially useful when there is no clear trigger or when other symptoms have appeared.

When to seek urgent care

Seek urgent medical help if heavy sweating occurs with chest pain, trouble breathing, fainting, confusion, severe weakness, or a very fast or irregular heartbeat. These symptoms can signal a problem that needs prompt assessment.

Get same-day advice for sweating with a high fever, severe headache, stiff neck, repeated vomiting, signs of dehydration, or a rapidly worsening illness. In a hot environment, move to a cool place and seek emergency help if the person is confused, collapses, or cannot drink.

Questions for your doctor

You could ask: What causes fit the timing and distribution of my sweating? Could any of my medicines or supplements contribute? Do my other symptoms suggest an infection, hormone change, or thyroid problem? Would an examination or blood tests help? What can I use safely to protect my skin and reduce sweating?

Questions people ask

Can stress cause continuous sweating?

Stress can activate the body's sweat response, especially on the palms, underarms, face, and feet. If sweating continues when you feel calm, happens during sleep, or comes with other symptoms, arrange a medical assessment.

Should I stop a medicine that seems to cause sweating?

Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own. Ask the prescriber or pharmacist whether sweating is a possible side effect and whether the timing or dose needs review.
