Continuous diarrhea: what to know

Short answer
Continuous diarrhea needs attention to hydration and its associated symptoms because infection, food intolerance, medication effects or digestive conditions can all contribute.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What it may mean
Food Poisoning and Gastroenteritis can cause sudden loose stools with cramps, nausea or vomiting. Giardiasis may follow unsafe water or travel. Food Intolerance can produce symptoms after particular foods, while Coeliac Disease may cause ongoing digestive problems linked to gluten exposure. Irritable Bowel Syndrome can cause recurring bowel changes, often with abdominal discomfort. Crohn's Disease may involve diarrhea with pain, fatigue or weight loss. An overactive thyroid, known as Hyperthyroidism, can also alter bowel frequency. The pattern, duration, medicines, travel and associated symptoms help a clinician sort these possibilities.
What to do
Take frequent small drinks of water or an oral rehydration solution, especially after a loose stool. Eat simple foods that you tolerate and avoid alcohol, foods that clearly trigger symptoms, and large amounts of caffeine. Wash hands carefully and avoid preparing food for others while an infectious cause is possible. Keep a record of stool appearance, frequency, pain, fever, vomiting, recent antibiotics, travel and new foods. Do not take anti-diarrheal medicine if you have blood in the stool or significant fever without medical advice.
When to seek care
Seek urgent help for severe or worsening abdominal pain, blood or black stool, fainting, confusion, very little urine, inability to keep fluids down, or signs of serious dehydration. Arrange prompt medical review if diarrhea persists, keeps returning, follows recent antibiotics or travel, or comes with fever, weight loss or nighttime symptoms. Babies, older adults and people with significant medical conditions can become dehydrated quickly.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether you need stool testing, blood tests or a review of your medicines. Tell the clinician about travel, water exposure, food triggers, family bowel conditions, recent antibiotics and whether pain improves after passing stool.
