What should you know about continual runny nose?

Clear discharge with sneezing, itchy eyes, or triggers such as dust, pets, or seasons can fit allergic rhinitis, including house dust mite or pet allergy. A common cold may bring congestion, sore throat, cough, or a short-lived change in smell. Influenza and COVID-19 can include nasal symptoms with fever, aches, cough, or fatigue. Facial pressure, thick discharge, reduced smell, or symptoms persisting after infection can occur with sinusitis. Smoke, strong scents, dry air, or temperature changes may also irritate the nose.

Notice when discharge starts, its colour and thickness, possible triggers, and other symptoms. Reduce smoke and strong fragrances, wash hands, and consider saline nasal rinsing with safe prepared or appropriately treated water. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether an antihistamine or nasal treatment fits your health history. Avoid prolonged self-treatment when the problem keeps returning or affects sleep.

Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, swelling of the face or throat, confusion, a severe headache with neck stiffness, or rapid deterioration. Arrange review for one-sided persistent discharge, recurrent nosebleeds, facial swelling, severe facial pain, high fever, or symptoms that do not settle. Testing may be useful when infection is suspected.
