Contact dermatitis on dark skin: what to know

Contact dermatitis is an inflammatory reaction after the skin touches an irritant or an allergen. On richly pigmented skin, redness may be subtle or absent; warmth, swelling, texture change, itch, or a change in pigmentation may be easier to notice. The rash often follows the contact pattern, such as where a product, adhesive, metal, fragrance, detergent, or hair product touched the skin. Scratching can break the surface and leave darker or lighter marks after the inflammation settles.

Stop the suspected new product or exposure, and gently rinse the area if residue may remain. Avoid scrubbing, exfoliating acids, essential oils, and fragranced products while the skin is unsettled. Keep nails short and use a cool compress instead of scratching. Photograph the area in consistent light so gradual colour and texture changes are easier to compare.

Arrange medical assessment if the rash is spreading, repeatedly returning, very itchy, painful, oozing, or not settling after the suspected trigger is removed. Seek urgent help for facial or tongue swelling, breathing difficulty, widespread blistering, skin peeling, fever, or involvement of the eyes or mouth. Do not assume a lack of visible redness means the reaction is mild.

Ask which trigger is most plausible, whether patch testing could help, how to treat inflammation safely on your skin tone, and how to reduce the chance of lingering colour change. Mention every product, medication, workplace exposure, and cosmetic treatment used near the affected area.
