What should you know about contact cheilitis on lips?

Irritant contact cheilitis can follow frequent lip licking, saliva, wind, cold air, fragranced balms, flavouring agents, or harsh toothpaste. Allergic contact cheilitis is an immune reaction to an ingredient such as fragrance, flavour, preservative, sunscreen, or a cosmetic component. Burning, scaling, cracking, redness, tenderness, and swelling may affect the lips or the skin around them. The timing of flares after a product is useful, but the visible rash can resemble other forms of cheilitis.

Pause non-essential lip products and avoid licking, biting, peeling, and fragranced or flavoured products while the skin settles. Rinse gently with lukewarm water, use a simple protective ointment, and shield the lips from wind and cold. Emollient Therapy can support the skin barrier. If inflammation continues, a clinician may prescribe a short course of Topical Corticosteroids or arrange allergy testing; do not use a steroid product around the mouth without instructions.

Book a review if cracking, scaling, or swelling persists, repeatedly returns, bleeds, or interferes with eating. Seek urgent help for rapidly increasing lip or tongue swelling, throat tightness, wheezing, trouble breathing, dizziness, or widespread hives. A sore that does not heal or a firm changing area also needs examination.

Ask whether the pattern fits irritation or allergy, which ingredients to avoid, and whether patch testing could identify a trigger. Ask what barrier product to use, how long any prescribed treatment should continue, and when persistent cracking needs further examination.
