What should you know about constant runny nose?

Clear, watery discharge with sneezing or itchy eyes can occur with Allergic Rhinitis, including reactions to house dust mites or pets. A cold, influenza, or COVID-19 may bring a runny nose with sore throat, cough, fever, or tiredness. Sinusitis can cause congestion, facial pressure, reduced sense of smell, or thicker mucus. Irritants such as smoke, strong scents, dry air, or changes in temperature may trigger a runny nose without an infection.

Track how long the discharge lasts, whether it is clear or coloured, and what brings it on. Reduce exposure to smoke and strong fragrances, wash hands, and use fluids and rest if you also feel unwell. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether saline care or an allergy treatment is suitable; use nasal decongestant sprays only as directed because prolonged use can worsen congestion. Arrange a review if symptoms keep returning, interfere with sleep, or do not settle as expected.

Seek urgent care for trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or face, confusion, severe weakness, or a rapidly worsening illness. Get prompt advice for severe facial pain, swelling around an eye, a stiff neck, or a high fever with marked illness. A one-sided, persistent, bloody, or foul-smelling discharge also needs medical assessment, particularly after an injury.
