What should you know about constant nausea and heartburn?

Heartburn is a burning feeling caused when stomach contents move upwards into the oesophagus; nausea can accompany this irritation. Acid Reflux may be more noticeable after meals or when lying down. Gastritis, Peptic Ulcer and Hiatus Hernia are other possibilities. Obesity can increase pressure around the stomach, but symptoms do not identify a single cause. Chest discomfort should not automatically be assumed to be heartburn.

Try smaller meals, avoid lying down soon after eating, and notice whether particular foods, alcohol or late meals trigger symptoms. Raise the upper body during sleep if advised, and avoid smoking. Get urgent help for crushing or spreading chest pain, breathlessness, fainting, vomiting blood, black stools, severe abdominal pain or repeated vomiting. Arrange prompt review for trouble swallowing, unexplained weight loss, persistent vomiting or heartburn that is becoming more frequent.
