What should you know about constant itching in pubic area?

The pubic area is exposed to sweat, rubbing, shaving, hair-removal products, detergents, and fragranced washes. Irritant or contact dermatitis may cause burning, redness, dryness, or scaling after a product change. A skin yeast infection often causes a moist, inflamed rash in folds. Scabies may cause intense itching that is worse at night and may affect other household members. Eczema, psoriasis, lichen planus, hives, or another skin problem can also affect the area. Itching does not by itself identify a sexually transmitted infection, but sores, blisters, discharge, or pain with urination need medical assessment.

Wash the external skin with lukewarm water and a mild fragrance-free cleanser, then pat dry. Stop new fragranced products, wipes, deodorants, and hair-removal products until the skin settles. Wear loose breathable underwear, change after sweating, and avoid scratching. Do not put steroid, antifungal, or antiseptic products inside the vagina, penis opening, or anus unless a clinician directs you. A clinician can identify whether the rash needs emollient care, an antifungal, or another treatment.

Book an appointment if the itch continues, repeatedly returns, spreads, disrupts sleep, or causes cracks and bleeding. Seek prompt care for painful blisters or sores, pus, fever, rapidly spreading redness, significant swelling, or difficulty passing urine. If there has been a new sexual contact and symptoms include sores, discharge, or burning, request sexual-health assessment and avoid sexual contact until advised.
