Constant Burping: Common Reasons and What to Do

Short answer
Constant burping often results from swallowed air, reflux, indigestion, or another digestive problem, and persistent symptoms should be assessed in context.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common mechanism
- Swallowing extra air during eating, drinking, talking, or smoking
- Possible digestive links
- Reflux, gastritis, hiatus hernia, irritable bowel syndrome, or H. pylori infection
- Useful first step
- Keep a symptom and food-and-drink record while slowing meals
What constant burping may mean
Burping releases air from the upper digestive tract. Eating quickly, talking while eating, chewing gum, drinking through a straw, smoking, or having fizzy drinks can increase the amount of air you swallow. Some people also swallow more air when anxious or when they repeatedly try to force a burp.
Frequent burping can occur with acid reflux, when stomach contents move upward and may cause a sour taste, burning behind the breastbone, or regurgitation. Gastritis, a hiatus hernia, and irritation in the stomach can also cause upper-abdominal discomfort with belching. Irritable bowel syndrome may bring burping alongside bloating, abdominal pain, constipation, or diarrhoea. Helicobacter pylori infection is another possible digestive cause and needs testing rather than guessing from burping alone.
What you can do
Track when the burping occurs and record foods, drinks, eating speed, medicines, and associated symptoms. Try smaller bites, slower meals, and still drinks; reduce gum, straws, smoking, and fizzy beverages if they trigger symptoms. Avoid lying down soon after eating, especially if burping comes with reflux.
Arrange a medical review if the symptom continues, disrupts sleep, or keeps returning. A clinician may ask about reflux, bowel changes, abdominal pain, weight change, and medicines, then decide whether examination or testing is appropriate. Do not start antibiotics or long-term acid-reducing treatment without advice; the right treatment depends on the cause.
When to seek care
Seek urgent medical help for burping with severe or persistent chest pain, trouble breathing, fainting, vomiting blood, or black stools. Prompt assessment is also needed for repeated vomiting, difficulty swallowing, severe abdominal pain, or unintentional weight loss. These symptoms can have causes that need timely evaluation and should not be explained away as trapped air.
If none of these warning signs is present, book a routine appointment when frequent burping persists or comes with troublesome reflux, ongoing nausea, or changes in bowel habits. Bring your symptom record and a list of medicines, including products taken without a prescription.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what pattern best fits your symptoms, whether reflux or another digestive condition should be considered, and whether testing for Helicobacter pylori is appropriate. You can also ask which food or drink changes are worth trying, how long to try them, and whether any current medicine may be contributing.

Questions people ask
Can constant burping be caused by acid reflux?
Yes. Reflux may cause frequent burping together with a sour taste, burning behind the breastbone, or food coming back up, but burping alone does not establish the cause.
Should I see a doctor for frequent burping?
Arrange a routine assessment if it persists, repeatedly returns, or comes with reflux, nausea, abdominal discomfort, or bowel changes. Seek urgent help for chest pain, breathing difficulty, vomiting blood, black stools, severe pain, or trouble swallowing.
What can reduce swallowed air?
Eat more slowly, take smaller bites, choose still drinks, and consider reducing gum, straws, smoking, and fizzy drinks if they bring on symptoms.
