What should you know about congestion with strep throat?

Strep throat is caused by streptococcal bacteria and commonly presents with sore throat, fever, red or swollen tonsils, painful swallowing and swollen neck glands. Cough, sneezing and a runny or blocked nose point more toward a viral respiratory illness, although symptoms can overlap. Tonsillitis describes inflamed tonsils and may be caused by viruses or bacteria. A symptom pattern alone cannot confirm the cause, so a clinician may use an examination and a throat test.

Rest, drink regularly and use soothing fluids or age-appropriate pain relief if suitable for you. Avoid sharing cups, utensils or toothbrushes while you are unwell, and wash your hands often. Arrange a GP consultation when throat pain is marked, swallowing is difficult, fever persists or symptoms are not settling. Antibiotic treatment is used when bacterial infection is diagnosed or strongly suspected; never use someone else’s prescription.

Seek urgent care for difficulty breathing, inability to swallow saliva or fluids, drooling, a muffled voice, severe one-sided throat swelling, neck swelling or confusion. Contact a clinician promptly if dehydration develops, symptoms worsen quickly or you have a significant immune problem. These warning signs matter regardless of whether congestion is present.
