What should you know about conductive hearing test?

An audiologist may compare hearing through air with hearing through bone. A difference between these pathways can suggest that sound is being reduced before it reaches the inner ear. The assessment may include listening to tones, repeating words, and checking the eardrum or middle-ear movement. Earwax buildup, fluid, infection, or changes in the small middle-ear bones can affect the result. The result describes hearing function; it does not by itself identify one cause.

Attend with your ears free of headphones or hearing devices unless the clinic gives different instructions. Tell the clinician about recent ear pain, discharge, infections, injuries, loud-noise exposure, or a sudden change in hearing. Depending on the findings, the next step may be ear examination, wax removal, a repeat test, or review for a middle-ear condition. Do not put cotton buds or objects into the ear while waiting.

Arrange prompt medical assessment for sudden hearing loss, severe ear pain, new facial weakness, marked dizziness, or fluid or blood from the ear. Seek urgent help if dizziness comes with difficulty speaking, weakness, fainting, or a severe new headache. Gradual hearing difficulty still deserves review because it can affect communication and balance.

Ask whether the pattern suggests a conductive, inner-ear, or mixed hearing problem; whether wax, fluid, or infection could explain it; and whether you need a repeat Hearing Test or specialist review.
