What should you know about conditioned response audiometry?

An audiologist presents tones or speech through headphones, earphones, or speakers. The person learns a simple listening game, such as turning toward a sound, placing a toy, or pressing a button. The audiologist changes the loudness and pitch to find the quietest sounds detected at different frequencies.

The method is useful when a person can understand and repeat the task but may not be ready for a conventional hand-raising test. Results can be recorded for each ear and compared with age-appropriate expectations. Earwax buildup, middle-ear problems, attention, language, or tiredness can affect the result, so the findings are interpreted with the examination and history.

Bring information about hearing concerns, speech or school changes, ear infections, noise exposure, medicines, and previous hearing tests. Explain the task in simple language and allow the patient to practise responding to a sound. Choose a time when the child or adult is rested, and bring any hearing devices normally used.

The test is non-invasive and usually requires quiet cooperation rather than a painful procedure. Tell the audiologist if instructions are unclear, sounds seem uncomfortable, or attention is fading. Further testing may be recommended when responses are inconsistent.

Arrange hearing assessment for ongoing difficulty following speech, delayed speech, frequent requests for repetition, tinnitus, or concern noticed at home or school. Seek prompt medical care for sudden hearing loss, severe ear pain, ear discharge, new one-sided symptoms, or hearing change with severe dizziness. Hearing changes with recurrent spinning attacks may need evaluation for Meniere's disease.
