Concerta rash: what to know

A medication-related eruption can appear after starting Concerta, changing the dose, or taking another product, but timing alone cannot prove the cause. The rash may be itchy, red, raised, blotchy, or widespread. Other possibilities include contact dermatitis from a product, heat rash, atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, ringworm, scabies, or intertrigo.

Note where the rash began, how quickly it spread, whether it blanches when pressed, and whether there are blisters, peeling, mouth sores, fever, or facial swelling. Photographing the change in good light can help the prescriber compare it over time.

Contact the prescriber or pharmacist promptly and provide the dose, start date, recent changes, other medicines, supplements, and any new skin products. Do not restart a stopped medicine, double a dose, or make an abrupt treatment change without instructions from the clinician managing it.

Use gentle, fragrance-free skin care and avoid scratching, heat, and new topical products until the cause is clearer. Keep a list of every medicine and product used around the onset. A clinician may need to examine the rash to distinguish a drug rash from another condition.

Get emergency help for trouble breathing or swallowing, swelling of the lips, tongue, face, or throat, faintness, or rapidly spreading hives. Seek urgent assessment for skin pain, blistering, peeling, purple spots, sores in the mouth or eyes, or fever with a rapidly worsening rash. These features need evaluation rather than home treatment.

Ask whether the timing and appearance could fit a drug eruption, whether Concerta should be held, and which alternative treatment plan is safe. Confirm what symptoms should trigger emergency care and whether other medicines or products could be contributing.
